About Bon Jovi
John Francis Bongiovi, Jr. was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey on
March 2nd, 1962, and grew up in nearby Sayreville. He spent much of
his teenage years cutting classes to play guitar and sing in local
rock bands. Jon -- he dropped the "h" from his name around this time
-- had a music industry connection in cousin Tony who owned the Power
Station, a well-known New York City recording studio. He was hired as
a janitor, and later began recording demos at the studio, backed by
members of the E Street Band, among others.
One of those demos, "Runaway," became a local radio hit, prompting
Bongiovi to form his own band. He signed to Mercury/Polygram in July
1983, changed his surname to Bon Jovi, and christened his new group
(consisting of Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres, and Alec John
Such) likewise. They released their eponymous debut early in 1984.
Spurred on by videos for "Runaway" and "She Don't Know Me," which
showcased Jon's good looks, the album cracked the top 50 and produced
a national top 40 hit with the former tune. They headlined their own
club tour, and reached larger auditions opening for the Scorpions,
Whitesnake and Kiss.
Following the success of Jon Bon Jovi?s debut, cousin Tony sued the
band, insisting it was he who developed their sound. The case was
eventually settled out of court. The group's second album, 7800
Degrees Fahrenheit, was released in 1985 and went gold. Despite their
moderate success, Jon and the boys hadn't reached the superstar status
they'd set out to achieve. But all that would change with the release
of Bon Jovi?s third album.
Slippery When Wet arrived in August 1986. The album produced two
back-to-back U.S. No. 1 singles -- "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Livin'
On A Prayer" -- as well as the No. 7 anthem, "Wanted Dead or Alive."
The album initially topped the charts for a week in the fall; it
returned to the summit early in '87 for another seven consecutive
weeks (for a total of 94 weeks on the Billboard charts), knocking
fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-85 out of the
pole position. The LP went on to sell over 12 million copies in the
U.S. alone, making it the biggest-selling rock album of the year, and
establishing Jon Bon Jovi and the band as superstars.
Jon Bon Jovi made his first film appearance in 1988's The Return of
Bruno. He played himself in the Bruce Willis mockumentary that also
featured Michael J. Fox, Elton John, and Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley
of Kiss. Meanwhile, Bon Jovi's fourth LP, New Jersey, was released in
September '88. It topped the Billboard album chart for a month and
contained five U.S. top 10 singles, including another pair of chart
toppers in "Bad Medicine" and "I'll Be There For You." The band
embarked upon an extensive 18-month world tour, after which they
enjoyed a lengthy and much deserved hiatus.

During the break from the band, Jon Bon Jovi married his
high-school sweetheart and karate champion Dorothea Hurley, and wrote
the soundtrack for Young Guns II. The film (which included a cameo
from Jon) and album were released in the summer of 1990, and gave Bon
Jovi his first solo No. 1 song with "Blaze of Glory." The album itself
peaked at No. 3, and earned Jon Oscar and Grammy nominations, as well
as the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. A second single,
"Miracle," whose video featured a then-unknown Matt LeBlanc, reached
No. 12.
Bon Jovi the band returned in the fall of 1992 with Keep The Faith.
Despite the critical praise, the album failed to match the
mega-success of its predecessors in the U.S., peaking at No. 5 and
spending only two weeks in the top 10. In the four years since the
release of New Jersey, musical tastes had changed, largely due to the
explosion of grunge that year; pop-metal seemed to be on its way out,
though Keep The Faith still managed to produce a top 10 smash in the
power ballad "Bed Of Roses." Much to the surprise of chart watchers
and the band itself, the album debuted at No. 1 in Britain.
1994's Cross Road, a Bon Jovi greatest hits collection that spawned
the chart staple "Always" (among the album's two original songs), was
followed by These Days in 1995, which was a bigger hit in Britain and
Europe than in the U.S. The band's musical turning point was
underscored by the departure of player Alec John Such. As for Jon's
film career, he landed his first real acting role, appearing in
Moonlight and Valentino along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Kathleen
Turner. He followed this up with his first lead role in The Leading
Man (1996), playing an American actor in London.
Jon Bon Jovi?s first official solo album, Destination Anywhere, was
released in June 1997. The disc was accompanied by a short film of the
same name that featured Jon Bon Jovi, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, and
Whoopi Goldberg. He spent the next couple of years concentrating on
acting, appearing in Row Your Boat, the Edward Burns-directed No
Looking Back and Homegrown (all 1998), starring Billy Bob Thornton. In
1999, he guest-starred in an episode of HBO's Sex and the City.
Following a five-year gap between releases, Bon Jovi reunited in 2000
for their seventh studio album, Crush. The disc debuted at No. 9 on
the Billboard chart and was certified double platinum in the U.S. Bon
Jovi's UK fan base was still strong as ever, as the album entered the
British charts at No. 1. The album included "It's My Life," one of
their biggest hits in a decade. The band earned Grammy nods for Best
Rock Album and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group for "It's My
Life."
Bon Jovi's eighth album, Bounce, entered the Billboard charts at No. 2
in October 2002, making it the highest chart debut in their 20-year
history. The band wrapped up their North American tour headlining
Tiger Jam VI in 2003, a benefit concert that raises money for the
Tiger Woods Foundation and other children's charities.
