About The Cubs
How do we judge the 2004 season for the Chicago Cubs, now that we know
this season will not include a postseason? "We've done something,"
Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Saturday. "We're not failures. I'll use
the word 'partial success.' "
That is a gray area right there for the Cubs, that "partial success"
concept. It is better than "a definite maybe," but it is in the same
Cubs ballpark as "cautiously optimistic." The Hunt for Cubs Blue
October did not end well Saturday. The Cubs surrendered a four-run
lead and lost to the Atlanta Braves, 8-6. This was the Cubs? seventh
loss in their last eight games, and it spelled an official end to the
Cubs? hopes in the National League Wild Card race.
The Cubs won 88 games in the 2004 season, which is the same number the
Cubs won last season when they were widely judged to be a splendid
success, even if they disappointed Cub Nation at the very end. The
2003 Cubs won the NL Central title and advanced to the brink of the
World Series in Baker's first season at the helm. Obviously, even
bigger and better things were in store for the Cubs. And that was sort
of the problem.

"Last year, it was exhilarating and thrilling that we were winning
in the first place," Baker says. "This year it's: 'Why aren't we in
first place?' The storyline has changed."
Yes, and so have the expectations. The Cubs, along with the Astros,
were the popular preseason picks in the NL Central, because they had
beefed up the rotation and the bullpen and the bench, and had made a
significant upgrade at first base with the acquisition of Derrek
Lee.
The Chicago Cubs were struck by a wave of injuries early. Cubs?
manager Dusty Baker must be given credit for keeping this Chicago
club afloat at a time when it was a patchwork operation. The Cubs
eventually reached something like full health. And even when it
became obvious that no one was going to touch the St. Louis
Cardinals during this regular season, the Chicago Cubs still looked
like an obvious Wild Card choice. But the Cubs faded badly down the
stretch, losing their last five games at Wrigley Field.
What happened to the Chicago Cubs? The fact that the Cubs players
have not had a day off since Sept. 9 has not been helpful. On
Saturday, Baker described his Chicago Cubs team as "running on
fumes." But the Cubs, at times, have looked more like they were
running on empty. The Cubs have had problems at the back of the
bullpen. The Cubs have had problems with hitting in the clutch. The
Cubs have been all or nothing offensively, not capable enough of
manufacturing runs. The Cubs have had base running blunders. And the
Cubs have had critical defensive lapses.
The Cubs this season were not notable for triumphs, but for Cubs
players pointing the finger of blame at umpires, writers,
broadcasters and anybody else who came within eyesight. In the end,
this created an atmosphere that was either surreal or unhealthy for
the Chicago Cubs, or both.
So reasonable people would believe that this season has been
disappointing, right? Yes, but the mitigating factor in this
discussion is the Chicago Cubs' history. The mitigating factor is
always the Chicago Cubs' history. This season marks the first time
in 32 years that the Chicago Cubs have had back-to-back winning
seasons. Faced with numbers such as this, to say nothing of the
96-year drought between World Series championships, any smidgeon of
Chicago Cubs success might seem OK, even a partial success.
