About Janet Jackson

It would have been inconceivable during her various siblings' commercial heyday, but the youngest Jackson has become the family's musical heavyweight. Though it took Janet Jackson several years to get her career off the ground, even brother Michael must now seek Janet out to give his flagging fortunes a boost.

Janet Jackson has come a long way from a spotty teenage track record that included two minimally-successful albums and an annulled seven-month marriage to musician James DeBarge. Janet's fortunes changed in 1985 when she hooked up with ex-Time members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

The budding production team crafted a collection of hard-edged, swinging funk and radio-ready ballads that made Jackson's pedestrian vocals irrelevant, and the result, Control, went on to top the charts in 1986 and generated five top 10 hits. However, Jackson was able to follow that achievement with the even more successful Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 in 1989, another Jam/Lewis production that saw her gain credibility for improving her vocals and co-writing several tracks. The album became her Thriller, charting for two years and racking up seven top 10 hits--four of them No. 1's, including the self-penned rocker "Black Cat."

After inking a $50 million deal with Virgin, Janet Jackson returned as a sexpot in 1993 with Janet, which contained several erotic spoken interludes amid the usual Jam/Lewis-produced grooves. While showing off her newly-sculpted physique on MTV and a topless cover of Rolling Stone, Janet also picked up her first Grammy for Best R&B song ("That's The Way Love Goes"). As is the case with so many musicians, however, a film career appears to be Jackson's eventual goal, despite wretched reviews for her appearance in 1993's Poetic Justice. But a new $80 million contract with Virgin signed in 1996 kept her active musically for the foreseeable future, yielding 1997's The Velvet Rope, 2001's All For You, and, most recently, Damita Jo.
