Bills Tickets
As the American Football League?s seventh team, the Buffalo Bills
entered pfcro football on October 28, 1959 when Ralph C. Wilson was
awarded the franchise. The Bills have experienced extended periods of
excellence as well as extended periods of futility.
The Bills' first brush with success came in their fourth season
(1963), when they tied for the AFL Eastern division crown (where they
ultimately lost to the Boston Patriots in a playoff). In 1964 and
1965, the Bills won their division and defeated the San Diego Chargers
for the AFL championship.
Dolphins Tickets
No pro football team has graduated from the ranks of first-year loser
to ultimate winner as quickly as the Miami Dolphins. In 1967, the
Dolphins (founded by Joseph Robbie in 1967) became the ninth member of
the AFL. Only six years later, Miami became the only NFL team in NFL
history (still today) to have a perfect season. In 1972, the Dolphins
won the AFC East, the AFC championship and Super Bowl VII, where they
defeated the Washington Redskins, 14-7. Including the playoffs, the
Dolphins were a perfect 17-0.
Jets Tickets
Harry Wismer sold his bankrupt franchise the New York Titans (one of
the AFL's charter franchises) to a five-man group headed by David
"Sonny" Werblin for $1,000,000 in February of 1963. Soon after the
transaction, the "new" team the changed their name to the New York
Jets and Weeb Ewbank was chosen to be the coach.
Patriots Tickets
Billy Sullivan Jr., a Boston businessman with a strong sports
background, secured an AFL franchise on November 22, 1959. In keeping
with New England history, the nickname Patriots was selected by a
panel of Boston sportswriters after a contest to name the team. The
Boston team was involved in two significant "firsts" in 1960. On July
30, the Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills in the first AFL
pre-season game. Then, on September 9, they lost to the Denver
Broncos, 13-10, in the first-ever AFL regular-season game.

Bengals Tickets
In 1966, Cincinnati's city council approved the construction of
Riverfront Stadium, scheduled for completion by 1970. In 1967, a group
headed by Brown was awarded an AFL franchise that would begin play the
next year. Brown named his team the Bengals in recognition of previous
Cincinnati pro football franchises that had the name in the 1930's and
1940's. Brown himself returned to the coaching ranks for the team's
first eight years. Although he retired after the 1975 season, he
continued to serve as general manager until his death in 1991. Mike
Brown then succeeded his father as general manager.
Browns Tickets
The history of the Cleveland Browns began in 1944 when a Cleveland
businessman by the name of Arthur B. McBride acquired a franchise in
the All-America Football Conference to commence play two years later.
McBride's first decision as owner of the Cleveland Browns was to hire
Paul Brown (a very successful coach in high school and college) as his
head coach and general manager.
Ravens Tickets
After an 11-year absence, pro football returned to Baltimore in 1996.
The Ravens, a team that formerly played in Cleveland, moved into
Baltimore Memorial Stadium and began play in the 1996 season. "This is
a new beginning and a new era for us," Ravens owner Art Modell told
fans at the team's naming ceremony. (The name Ravens was inspired by
the poetry of former Baltimore resident Edgar Allan Poe.)
Steelers Tickets
The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July 8,
1933 and are the sixth-oldest franchise in the NFL. The Pittsburgh
Steelers were known as the Pirates until 1940. In their first 40
years, the Steelers struggled without winning a title of any kind
until 1972 (when they finally won the AFC Central). Two years later,
after four decades of futility, Art Rooney and the Pittsburgh Steelers
took home the Vince Lombardi trophy as the winners of Super Bowl IX.
South
Colts Tickets
In 1953, Baltimore was awarded a new National Football League
franchise. The team was nicknamed Colts, the second professional
football club to carry that name in seven years. In 1947, the
Baltimore Colts were established in the All-America Football
Conference. As part of the peace agreement between the AAFC and NFL
three years later, the Colts became a member of the National Football
League. Ultimately, that Colts team failed and the franchise was
disbanded soon after the 1950 season.
Jaguars Tickets
On September 16, 1991, armed with a $60 million commitment from the
Jacksonville City Council to renovate the Gator Bowl, Touchdown
Jacksonville!, Ltd. filed an expansion application with the NFL. The
application named a nine-member partnership that included J. Wayne
Weaver (who now serves as the club's Chairman and CEO). One of eleven
cities to apply, Jacksonville was considered by many to be the longest
shot on the board. Still, that didn't keep the group from announcing
that the future team would be named "Jaguars."
Texans Tickets
The Houston Texans introduced Dom Capers as their first head coach on
Jan. 21, 2001. In his first season with the Houston Texans, Capers
helped the Texans win four games, including a stunning season-opening
win over Dallas at Reliant Stadium. The Houston Texans became the
first expansion entry to win its regular season debut since the 1961
Vikings. The Texans later beat the Jaguars and two eventual playoff
teams, the Giants and the Steelers.
Titans Tickets
Tennessee Oilers Owner/President K.S. "Bud" Adams Jr. was one of the
founding fathers of the AFL. (After the 1996 season, the Oilers moved
from Houston to Tennessee.) Billy Cannon, the Heisman Trophy winner
from Louisiana State, was the Oilers's and the AFL's first big-name
signing. In 1960 and 1961, Houston won back-to-back AFL titles. The
Oilers almost won a third straight title in 1962, but they lost a
thrilling, double-overtime game to the Dallas Texans, 20-17. At the
time, it was the longest professional football game ever played?77:54.
West
Broncos Tickets
The Denver Broncos have been one of football's most consistent winners
since the merger between the AFL and the NFL in 1970. Before the
merger is another topic entirely. In the early 1960's, the AFL was the
object of numerous jokes and jeers by the NFL, and the Denver Broncos
were the most ridiculed team of all.
Chargers Tickets
32 year old hotel executive Barron Hilton was awarded a franchise for
Los Angeles in the new AFL on August 14, 1959. This was the beginning
of the San Diego Chargers; they hit the ground running. The Los
Angeles Chargers won the AFL Western division championship in 1960,
but poor fan support forced Hilton to move his team 120 miles south to
San Diego in 1961.
Chiefs Tickets
The story of the Kansas City Chiefs began in 1959 when a 26-year-old
Texan by the name of Lamar Hunt, frustrated in his attempts to gain an
NFL franchise, embarked on an alternate course that would drastically
change the face of pro football. Lamar Hunt founded the American
Football League and served as its first president when eight new teams
began play in 1960.
Raiders Tickets
Although the AFL was formally organized on August 14, 1959, the
Oakland Raiders did not become the eighth member of the new league
until January 1960. The Raiders were selected as a replacement for the
Minneapolis franchise, which had defected to the NFL. Oakland's record
in its first three seasons was a miserable 9-33-0 and they averaged
fewer than 11,000 fans per game.

Cowboys Tickets
The Dallas became the NFL's first successful modern expansion team in 1960 with
Clint Murchison Jr. as Dallas's majority owner, Tex Schramm as general manager,
and Tom Landry as head coach. 1966 was the beginning of the Cowboys NFL-record
streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons, including 18 years in the playoffs, 13
division titles, five trips to the Super Bowl, and Dallas Cowboys wins in Super
Bowls VI and XII.
Eagles Tickets
The Eagles have been a Philadelphia institution since 1933. That year, a
syndicate headed by Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford
Yellowjackets franchise for $2,500. In 1941, a unique swap took place between
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in which the clubs traded home cities. Alexis
Thompson became the Eagles' owner.
Giants Tickets
The New York Giants were founded in October of 1925, when they played
their first game against the Frankford Yellow Jackets. While the
Giants struggled financially, they did manage to win their first
division title in 1927.
Redskins Tickets
The Washington Redskins have been one of the most dominant teams in professional
football over the last 25 years. The Redskins won three Super Bowls and made the
playoffs 13 times since 1971. But the organization's glory extends into the
early days of pro football and includes some of the most innovative people the
game has ever known. From George Preston Marshall to Jack Kent Cooke, from Vince
Lombardi to Joe Gibbs, from Sammy Baugh to John Riggins, the Redskins can be
proud of their football legacy.
North
Bears Tickets
The Chicago Bears are only one of two charter members of the National Football
League still existing. They began their 1000-game history in Decatur, Ill. In
1920, when the Staley Starch Company decided to sponsor a football team. On
September 17, 1920, the Staleys, represented by George Hala, joined the American
Professional Football Association, which became the National Football League in
1922. The franchise fee was $100.
Lions Tickets
The 1920's saw three separate failing attempts to establish a pro football team
in Detroit. In 1934, the "new" game took hold in the city when Detroit radio
executive George A. Richards purchased the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans for the
then-astounding sum of $8,000 and moved the franchise to the Motor City.
Packers Tickets
The incredible saga of the Green Bay Packers began in August 1919, when the
Indian Packing Company agreed to sponsor a local pro football team under the
direction of Earl (Curly) Lambeau. In 1921, the Green Bay Packers were granted a
membership in the new National Football League and rank as the third-oldest team
in pro football. In its storied existence, the Green Bay Packers? franchise has
enjoyed both periods of great success and terrible failure.
Vikings Tickets
Over the past 25 years, the Minnesota Vikings have consistently been at or near
the top of their division. During that same period, only the Dallas Cowboys have
made more playoff appearances. In addition, only four teams have played in more
Super Bowls than Minnesota, which has participated in four (Super Bowls IV,
VIII, IX and XI).
South
Buccaneers Tickets
NFL's 27th franchise was awarded to Florida tax lawyer Hugh Culverhouse in 1974
to begin play two years later as the Tampa Bay . John McKay was hired to be the
first coach of the Buccaneers after coaching at the University of Southern
California and winning four national championships in 16 years.
Falcons Tickets
The NFL awarded its 15th franchise to Rankin M. Smith, a 41-year-old life
insurance executive from Atlanta, for $8.5 million in June of 1965. After a
local contest to come up with a name for the city?s new football team, Smith
arrived at the current team name of the Atlanta Falcons.
Panthers Tickets
On October 26, 1993, after six years of hopeful anticipation, the
Carolina Panthers were awarded an NFL expansion franchise. Owner Jerry
Richardson's dream started on July 16, 1987, when he met in Charlotte
with a group of interested parties to discuss the feasibility of
entering the multi-city competition for two NFL expansion franchises.
Saints Tickets
The New Orleans Saints took "The City That Care Forgot" by storm. They won five
of their six preseason games. On September 17, 1967, they opened the regular
season against the Los Angeles Rams. Before a packed house of 80,879 in Tulane
Stadium, John Gilliam took the opening kickoff and raced 94 yards for a
touchdown. (The Rams went on to win, 27-13.) A final-game victory over the
Washington Redskins allowed the Saints to match the 3-11 first-year record of
both Minnesota (1961) and Atlanta (1966).
West
49ers Tickets
The San Francisco 49ers were charter members of the All-America Football
Conference, founded in 1946. The 49ers moved to the NFL in 1950 following the
collapse of the AAFC. In the 1950's, they boasted some of the game's greats:
Quarterbacks Frankie Albert and Y. A. Tittle, running backs Hugh McElhenny and
Joe Perry, tackle Bob St. Clair and defensive tackle Leo Nomellini, among
others. Regardless of all their talen, the 49ers sniffed a championship only
once during their first two decades in the NFL. In 1957, they tied Detroit for
the NFL Western division crown only to lose in a playoff.
Cardinals Tickets
Although in 1994 the Cardinals were renamed the Arizona Cardinals, there was
nothing new about one of the oldest teams in professional football history. The
Cardinals, a charter member of the NFL, trace their history back to 1898, when
Chris O'Brien formed the Morgan Athletic Club. A couple of years later, O'Brien
picked up some faded maroon jerseys from the University of Chicago. He
illustrated the clothing as "Cardinal red" and the team, then playing on Racine
Street in Chicago, became the Racine Street Cardinals.
Rams Tickets
The St Louis Rams are one of the NFL's oldest franchises, beginning their
football life in Cleveland in 1937. During their first six seasons in existence,
they managed to top .500 only once. In 1943, the franchise was disbanded for a
year as the result of a manpower shortage caused by World War II. The Rams
finally had a winning season in 1945 and beat the Washington Redskins in the NFL
Championship Game.
Seahawks Tickets
When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in 1976, it marked
the culmination of an almost 20 year quest for an NFL franchise. In 1957, people
in the Pacific Northwest began discussing the possibility of constructing a
domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On
June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the
64,984-seat Kingdome.
