About The Vikings
Over the past 25 years, the Minnesota Vikings have consistently been
at or near the top of their division. During that same period, only
the Dallas Cowboys have made more playoff appearances. In addition,
only four teams have played in more Super Bowls than Minnesota, which
has participated in four (Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX and XI).
The pro football saga in the Twin Cities began in August 1959, when
five Minnesota businessmen were awarded a franchise in the new AFL. In
January 1960, the same ownership group?made up of Bill Boyer, Ole
Haugsrud, Bernie Ridder, H. P. Skoglund and Max Winter?forfeited its
AFL membership and was then awarded the NFL's 14th franchise. The
Vikings began play in 1961.
Perhaps no team in history ever had a more spectacular debut than the
Minnesota Vikings. On September 17, 1961, rookie Fran Tarkenton came
off the bench to throw four touchdown passes and run for a fifth to
lead the Vikings to a 37-13 thrashing of the fabled Chicago Bears.
Twenty-five years later, in 1986, Tarkenton became the first Viking to
be elected to the Hall of Fame.
Minnesota's first management team was led by GM Bert Rose and coach
Norm Van Brocklin. Rose resigned from his position in 1964 and Van
Brocklin quit abruptly in the spring of 1967. The Vikings went to
Canada to get their replacements. Jim Finks, then general manager of
the Calgary Stampeders, was named the new GM, and Bud Grant, head
coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, became the new Vikings field
leader.

The success of the Minnesota Vikings over the next two decades
always will be highlighted by the image of the stone-faced Grant on
the sideline of the frozen field at old Metropolitan Stadium. In
their second year under Grant, the Minnesota Vikings began a stretch
in which they won 11 division titles in 13 years. They won the NFL
championship in 1969 and NFC titles in 1973, 1974 and 1976. Grant
retired in 1983 but came back for a year in 1985 before making his
retirement permanent. Grant's 168-108-5 record makes him the eighth-winningest
coach of all time.
Over the years, the names have changed?from Bud Grant and Fran
Tarkenton and Chuck Foreman and Alan Page to Dennis Green to Warren
Moon and Cris Carter?but Minnesota's winning tradition has remained
constant.
Mike Tice became the sixth head coach in the Minnesota Vikings'
44-year history on January 10, 2002. Tice has been associated with
the Vikings since 1992. He played tight end from 1992-93 and 1995,
coached the tight ends in 1996 and the offensive line from
1997-2001. Tice added the title of Assistant Head Coach for the
Minnesota Vikings 2001 season. Tice is the first Minnesota Vikings
head coach to have played for the team. He enters his 23rd season in
the NFL in 2004, spending 14 as a player and 9 in the coaching
ranks.
In his first season as head coach in 2002, Tice led the team to
three straight victories to end the season on a high note. It was
only the seventh time in the team's 42-year history that they had
won at least their last three contests. Two of the last three wins
helped knock the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins out of
the playoffs. The Minnesota Vikings became the first team in NFL
history to win a game on a two-point conversion (vs. New Orleans
32-31). The Vikings offense was second in the NFL, only trailing the
Super Bowl runner-up Oakland Raiders (6,237 to 6,192 yards). The
Minnesota Vikings led the NFL in rushing (2,507 yards) for the first
time ever and set team records for rushing touchdowns (26), yards
per carry (5.3) and first downs (350). Randy Moss had a then
career-high 106 catches while Michael Bennett rushed for 1,296
yards, the second highest total in team history. Both players earned
berths in the Pro Bowl.
In his second season as head coach in 2003, Tice led the Minnesota
Vikings to their first winning season since 2000. The Vikings six
straight wins to start the season combined with three wins to finish
the 2002 season marked the fourth longest (9 wins) winning streak in
team history. The Vikings led the NFL in offense for the first time
in their 43-year history and set a team record for yards with 6,294.
The Vikings scored 416 points, the second best total in team
history. The Minnesota Vikings sent four players to the Pro Bowl
including first-time starter Corey Chavous and starters Matt Birk
and Daunte Culpepper. The Minnesota Vikings 2003 draft class
featured all-rookie choices Kevin Williams and Onterrio Smith. The
Vikings defense led the NFC (and second in the NFL) in interceptions
with 28. The squad defeated four teams (Green Bay, Seattle, Kansas
City and Denver) that qualified for the playoffs. The Minnesota
Vikings also finished second in the NFC in turnover ratio (+11).
Heading into the 2004 season the Vikings have had 29 straight games
with 300-or-more-yards offense per game which is one shy of the team
and NFL record.
